In the work of Colombian artist Rosana Escobar (b. 1991), the relationship between the land and the materials that come from it serves as both foundation and method. Grounded in her dual background in biology and design, her practice bridges these disciplines by tracing materials such as fique, clay, plant fibers, and natural pigments back to their original ecosystems and reinventing them into objects of contemporary art.
Rosana spends extensive time in rural Colombia, learning from local communities about their ancestral craft. In forming bonds with the people and their land, Rosana creates striking art that explores the interwoven relationships between materials, people and the landscape, with each thread or knot holding the memory of a transforming world.
