Rosana Escobar

In the work of Rosana Escobar, the relationship between land and medium serves as both foundation and method. Her practice is deeply rooted in earth-born materials – such as fique, clay, plant fibers, and natural pigments – and the generational knowledge that sustains their use. Her striking art tells stories of a time slipping away, with each thread or knot holding the memory of a transforming landscape.

Working as a bridge between disciplines, as a biologist and textile artist Rosana traces materials back to their ecosystems and spends time with the people holding onto their ancestral craft. By spending valuable time in rural Colombia, Rosana explores the interwoven relationships between these materials, people, and the landscape.

Rosana Escobar (b. 1991) is a Colombian artist who lives between Colombia and the Netherlands. Her practice is shaped by her background in biology from the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) and design at the Design Academy Eindhoven (Netherlands). Her science training grounds her work with plant-based fibers in deep field research and agricultural cycles. She then relies on community reciprocity – built through field visits and conversations with local growers – to create her art.
